How knowledge of just one sutra of Vedic Maths can help a student crack CAT?
I am training students for CAT since last Twenty years. The students put in a lot of time and effort preparing for CAT. In this article I would outline how knowledge of just one sutra of Vedic maths can help a student clear CAT.
But before I write about the sutra let us analyze CAT.
IIMs are premier management institutes of India. They have produced numerous business leaders. Top echelons of the business world are full of IIMites. The IIMs conduct CAT (common admission test) every year in October – November. More than three lac students take the examination. But only 2900 (approx) are able to secure admissions into it.
It is one of the toughest examinations in India. CAT is difficult. CAT is difficult because it does not ask direct questions. The questions are put in such a way that it tests the ability of a student to apply the fundamentals and logic to a given situation.
In schools and colleges the students are exposed to direct questions. They are not taught the application of fundamentals. Therefore, most of the students find it difficult. The complexity becomes more pronounced when one is required to take care of negative marking as well.
The CAT 2013 will have only two sections. The first section is Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation and the second section is Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning. These two sections will be implemented sequentially with separate time limits. The examination will be 140 minutes. Candidates will have 70 minutes to answer 30 questions within each section which will have an on-screen countdown timer. Within the 70 min provided for the section, candidates can review the answers. Once the time ends for the first section, they will move to the second section and will no longer be able to go back.
QA & DI of CAT is little tough section for them who is not from Engineering or Science background. They are not at ease when it comes to preparation of QA & DI. But one sutra of Vedic Maths i.e Navshesh can help them on this front.
Navshesh means nine or remainder from nine. And this formula says that in a equation navshesh of LHS would be equal to navshesh of RHS.
Let me take an example of an equation:
635 + 237 = 872
In this case the sutra says that the navshesh of the Left Hand Side i.e 635 + 237 would be equal to navshesh of Right Hand Side i.e 872.
How?
Find out navshesh of 635 and add it to navshesh of 237 you would get navshesh of 872. To find navshesh of a number add them repeatedly till you get a single digit number.
Let us do it:
Navshesh of 635 = 5 (6 + 3 + 5 = 14 again– 1 + 4 = 5)
Navshesh of 237 = 3 (2 + 3 + 7 = 12 again– 1 + 2 = 3)
and
Navshesh of 872 = 8 (8 + 7 + 2 = 17 again– 1 + 7 = 8)
So by finding out the navshesh you can easily establish if the equation is correct or not.
Now let me tell you that you can apply this property not only to addition as shown above but anywhere where LHS = RHS. You can also apply it to verify if the option selected by you is correct or not. This would save a lot of your time wasted in doing rough work. In one of our courses Vedic Mathematics & Intelligent Guessing for CAT/ MBA I have covered application of navshesh in details.
